Unique Baby Nursery Design – Tips For the Vintage Nursery

Parents often feel the nursery occupies their thoughts long before the baby arrives. It is exciting and overwhelming to imagine creating the space your child will dream, laugh and grow in. The baby’s nursery should be unique to your family. A room you love, with a style you feel at home with.

Defining your nursery style is a great fist step when starting down the road of baby nursery design. A look that is currently becoming very popular, yet is still unique enough to make it your own, is the vintage baby nursery.

This nursery style evokes the feeling of the past, sweet and simple. You can create this look with flea-market treasures and family heirlooms. A fun idea is to add special pieces from your own childhood such as books and hand made toys.

You will have several designer crib sets to choose from in a vintage theme. Many unique crib bedding sets are available in toile and floral patterns; both chic choices for this look. You can mix and match patterns, a vintage nursery should not be too matchy. Adding a touch of chenille or an eyelet overlay on the crib skirt will give the bedding a feminine feel.

The nursery furniture you choose will help set the stage for a vintage look. Lind-style cribs, with their delicate spindles are still available today in a variety of finishes. Vintage style furniture often has a distressed or rubbed paint finish. You can incorporate pieces of actual antique furniture or add a patina or crackle finish to new designer kids’ furniture to give an aged look.

The color palette is key to setting the tone of the vintage nursery. It should be soft and “faded”: petal pink rather than hot pink, pale yellow rather than gold. Or consider using a charming wall paper print that transports the room to simpler times.

Accessorize the room with hooked rugs, quilted throws, framed art in aged frames. And last but not least, add a chandelier. It will be a perfect finish to this charming nursery and lend great presence to the room. This style of nursery may conjure feelings of the past, but it will also be the backdrop of your new memories with your baby. Treasure this time; the days are long, but the years go by fast.
